This one is still in progress, but we wanted to share it because the scope of the work tells a good story. The original garden bed had small rocks holding the edge - nothing substantial, nothing that really anchored the space. Over time it got overgrown and lost any definition it once had. We came in and rebuilt the whole thing from the ground up.

We pulled the old edging out and brought in full-size boulders to frame the bed. The difference in scale is significant. These aren't decorative pebbles - they're heavy, natural boulders that create a solid, defined border that will actually hold its shape year after year. Under the surface we laid fresh landscape fabric to keep weeds from pushing through, then topped it with river rock to give the bed a clean, low-maintenance finish.

New plants went in throughout the bed as well. We spaced them to give them room to fill in properly, so the finished look keeps getting better over time. The whole crew worked the job with hand tools, wheelbarrows, and a mini skid steer to move the heavier material efficiently without tearing up the lawn more than necessary.

This is just the first garden bed. We're continuing around the house, adding boulders to the remaining beds to tie the whole property together. Each section gets the same treatment - fabric, river rock, plants, and boulder edging. When it's all done, the landscape will have a consistent, natural look that matches the character of the property and the neighborhood here in Kalamazoo.
