A plain grass area around a tree is one of those spots that most homeowners just live with. It's hard to mow around, the roots make it messy, and it never really looks intentional. That's exactly what we were working with here at this Kalamazoo property.

We pulled out the grass and built a three-course paver retaining wall in a wide circle around the tree. The wall gave us a clean edge and enough height to work with - enough to fill the interior with white river rock and set the plants at a nice level relative to the surrounding lawn. It's a simple concept, but the execution matters a lot. The wall has to be level and consistent all the way around, or the whole thing looks off.

For the plant selection, we went with boxwoods and lavender. Boxwoods hold their shape well and stay green year-round, which means this bed looks good even when nothing else is blooming. The lavender adds some color and texture without being high-maintenance. Both plants work well with the rock mulch - they don't need a ton of moisture, and the rock helps with drainage and keeps weeds down.

The white river rock ties the whole thing together. It reads clean against the gray paver wall, and it keeps the focus on the tree and the plants rather than competing with them. From the back of the property looking toward the house, the bed now reads as a real focal point instead of just an afterthought in the yard.

This kind of feature is low-maintenance once it's in. No more wrestling a mower around the base of the tree, no more bare patches in the grass from root competition. It's a practical solution that also happens to look sharp - and that's the kind of work we enjoy doing around the Kalamazoo area.
